Liquid penetrant testing advantages and disadvantages
Advantages and Disadvantages of Penetrant Testing.
Like all nondestructive inspection methods, liquid penetrant inspection has both advantages and disadvantages. In other words Dye penetration inspection has it’s own advantages and disadvantages compared to other non-destructive testing methods.
Like all NDT inspection methods, liquid penetrant testing has both advantages and disadvantages. The method has high sensitivity to small surface discontinuities. Large areas and large volumes of parts/materials can be inspected rapidly and at low cost.
It is generally accepted that liquid penetrant testing has the following advantages: Sensitive to small surface discontinuities. Few material limitations—works on metallic, non-metallic, magnetic, non-magnetic, conductive, and non-conductive materials.
Advantages of the penetrant method of Non-Destructive Examination are: It is a very sensitive method, capable of finding extremely fine flaws. It can be used on magnetic and non-magnetic metals, some plastics and glass. Small objects, with awkward shapes, can be inspected.

Metal crack detection spray
There are some crack detection developer sprays. Those sprays highlights very fine cracks. They are also suitable for pressure testing & leak detection. As an example FLAWFINDER DEVELOPER is an aerosol applied white powder which is designed to draw the penetrant out of a flaw, and enhance the definition, to facilitate detection when used in conjunction with FLAWFINDER crack detection spray.
If you search throughout the internet you can easily find out all of the information about the Magnaflux product: crack detection spray / multi-use Spotcheck® SK series. For more information you can contact a supplier or the parent company.
There is a product called Dye Penetrant Crack Finder Kit. This kit did the job. It was less expensive than other kits probably due to smaller aerosol can. This will be fine with you if you only needed it for one inspection.
You can use this product For Detecting Cracks and Leaks in Metal Surfaces: Dye Penetrant Standard Developer, Non-Aqueous Wet, 12 oz Aerosol Can.
You can use those products to perform a surface crack detection using two of the most common nondestructive testing methods: liquid penetrant testing and magnetic particle testing.
You can use the GOODSON Glow Crack Detection sprays to find surface cracks in cast iron and aluminum under blacklights.
When using or performing dy-mark, dymark, flawcheck, crack detection, flaw finder the first two steps are to spray the test area with the Dy-Mark Flawchek Cleaner and wipe the surface with a cloth.
